The Dutch Roman Catholic Diocese of Fathers and Sisters played a central role in the organization and education, care and socio-cultural work.
As one of the first districts in Curaçao, the Community called "Brievengat" in 1964 was given its own Neighborhood Center knowned as "Buurtcentrum Brievengat". Many activities were organized, in the field of Sport, Neighborhood Festivities and Scouting.
With financing from the European Union, a brand new Neighborhood Center knowned as "Buurtcentrum Brievengat" was built in 1968.
The events of May 30, 1969 created a whole new era. In a relatively short period of time, major changes were made in both the Political and Social Systems on the Island. The emancipation and integration of the working class were initiated and prominent positions were increasingly filled by representatives from the local population instead of the Dutch Roman Catholic Diocese of Governors, Fathers and Sisters. These developments also touched the inhabitants of the Community called "Brievengat" the Older Community named "Brievengat Bieu" was traditionally a neighborhood where many Oil Refinery called "Shell" workers lived and the Neighbouring Center called "Buurtcentrum Brievengat" was for a long time ruled by the Roman Catholic Diocese (Bisdom) of Fathers and Sisters.
